What’s happening on Hong Kong’s creative front that you cannot afford to miss?
The 36th Hong Kong Film Awards 2017

The Hong Kong Film Awards was founded in 1982 with the aim to promote Hong Kong films locally and abroad. It recognises outstanding achievements, encourages professional development and promotes film culture.  The event will take place on 9 April at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.


Internet Economy Summit (IES)

With the theme of “Shaping the Internet Economy for Growth”, the Internet Economy Summit 2017 explores directions and strategies for capturing opportunities offered by the internet in propelling economic development.There will also be forums focusing on FinTech, Big Data, Smart City and e-Commerce.  The event will be held on 10 – 12 April 2017 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. 

The 41st Hong Kong International Film Festival

This year festival will open with “Love Off the Cuff” and close with “mon mon mon MONSTERS”, together with over 230 titles from 65 countries and regions. It congratulates and presents Asian Premieres of the award-winning films of the Berlin International Film Festival 2017, including “On Body and Soul”, winner of the Golden Bear Best Film; “Spoor”, winner of Silver Bear Best Film; and winner of Silver Bear Best Actor Bright Nights. HKIFF will take place from 11-25 April.

Le French May

Celebrating its Silver Jubilee, the 25th edition of Le French May Arts Festival will bring together the best talent from France and Hong Kong, adorned by a series of unprecedented programmes, ranging from hip hop dance to jazz music, street arts to antiques, cinema to design and Gastronomy. Highlights of the celebration include the unique exhibition of the National masterpieces from Le Louvre, and the third edition of So French So Innovative which showcases the best innovations and technologies France has to offer.

Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong

Affordable Art Fair returns with its 5th edition, focusing on creativity with an array of interactive and inspiring art education activities as well as artworks from 110 galleries, showcasing a diversified range of work of art priced between HK$1,000 and HK$100,000. It also features artists from Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong. M+, new for 2017, will bring on site the M+ Rover, a travelling pop-up creative studio trailer which tours secondary schools and community spaces.

World Sustainable Built Environment Conference 2017 (WSBE17) Hong Kong

The Construction Industry Council and the Hong Kong Green Building Council jointly present the WSBE17 Hong Kong on 5-7 June 2017 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Themed "Transforming Our Built Environment through Innovation and Integration: Putting Ideas into Action", Hong Kong has an ambitious target to "innovate" and "integrate". The conference will bring together 1,800 green building advocates, policy-makers, academics, and industry practitioners globally, offering an inspirational opportunity for delegates to transform the world's built environment.

Design Management Academy 2017 Hong Kong

The Design Management Academy’s 2017 international research conference “Research Perspectives on Creative Intersections” will be held at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University from 7- 9 June. Design is becoming more strategic. With Mainland China being the centre of manufacturing and emerging as the leader in the development of Internet services, the roles of designers are changing dramatically.

2017 SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence

The SOPA Awards for Editorial Excellence were established as a tribute to editorial excellence in both traditional and new media, and were designed to encourage editorial vitality throughout the region. The Awards cover a broad range of categories reflecting Asia’s diverse geo-political environment and vibrant editorial scene. The event will take place on 15 June 2017 at the Hong Kong Convention Centre.

The Launch of ViuTV's First English Channel

ViuTV has launched its first English-language channel ViuTVsix , connecting the world together with major news outlets CNN, Deutsch Welle (DW), NHK World and Al Jazeera News and its own daily news programme ViuTV News, co-produced with Reuters to provide the latest local and global news. The channel will also air ABC’s news magazine programme 20/20 and the HBO series. DogTV, the first TV channel specifically tailored to dogs, will also make its debut in April. The broadcasting schedule is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. the next day.


New Measures to Facilitate Cinema Development in Hong Kong

To facilitate the cinema development in Hong Kong, the Government will include a cinema requirement in the land lease of two designated government land sale sites, namely Kai Tak and Sha Tin.  The two sites are to include in the respective land lease a required minimum number of cinema seats. In addition, the government will further study the feasibility of accommodating a cinema complex at the Tourism Node in the Kai Tak Development and explore with the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority the feasibility of earmarking space for cinema development in the West Kowloon Cultural District.


Budget 2017-18: Diversified Development

The Financial Secretary has announced the 2017/18 Budget, outlining the government plan for its economy. Latest initiatives for the creative sectors include:

- To mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of HKSAR, a design exhibition and thematic HK film shows will be organised in overseas, the Mainland and Hong Kong to promote the creative industries.

- In view of the rapid development of E-sports in Hong Kong and other cities over the past few years, Cyberport will be invited to study the latest technology and products development and explore further promotion of e-sports in Hong Kong.

- To encourage private investment in local innovation and technology (I&T) startups, a HK$2 billion Innovation and Technology Venture Fund (ITVF) will be set up.
